Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanna Matson-Tandberg, founder, and CEO of ZV Botanicals, located in White Salmon, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ZV Botanicals offers both wellness counseling and products. We offer organic, hand-crafted, therapeutic grade, full-spectrum hemp extract, herbs, and essential oil infusions of tinctures, bitters, salves, body oils, etc. We strive to educate and empower our customers and clients through thoroughly researched protocols and formulas.

Our counseling clients and product customers are people who take control of their healing and are willing to embark on their own wellness journey with effective and safe tools for detoxification and rejuvenation.

Tell us about yourself

I am a board-certified Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor, Cannabis Clinician, and Yoga teacher. I try and embrace the journey of healing and the tools of Ayurveda in all aspects of my life. I personally found this authentic form of healing after spending years struggling with Crohn’s and Grave’s thyroid disease, severe disk disease, and degenerative arthritis in my spine. In my own life, and as a mother to two now-grown kids, I have learned to balance life with mindfulness practices, herbs, and exercise and to stay disciplined in my own healing. My life’s work is helping others find their own healing path by learning how to create balance in their lives and their bodies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Two-fold: My biggest accomplishment comes when once very sick, scared, and frustrated clients return to share their extraordinary stories of healing and well-being through the implementation of Ayurvedic routines, foods, and herbal supplements. My second accomplishment: Staying in business through COVID.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding good, honest, dependable people who are trustworthy and responsible and willing to invest their time in a small business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be willing to shift expectations, especially in terms of deadlines and dates. Everything takes longer than planned.
  2. Go slow, plan for the long game, and be patient.
  3. Be very sure that the business plan, in all its details, aligns with your values and beliefs. Always trust your gut instinct, especially when hiring or making business deals with others.
