Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allyson Schrier, CEO of Zinnia Technologies, Inc., located in Issaquah, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our product, Zinnia TV, is a care tool for family and professional caregivers of people living with dementia.

Tell us about yourself

My husband was diagnosed with dementia in his 40s. When he moved to long-term care, he was often left parked in front of a TV playing programming inappropriate for someone with his cognitive capacity. I wanted to create a meaningful viewing alternative for people like my husband that would drive connection and engagement. My motivation comes from testimonials from caregivers who use Zinnia TV to improve the lives of both the person they care for and themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a team that has far exceeded my wildest dreams and who had the creativity, drive, and compassion to turn an idea into a product.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time management! The more successful we become, the more work is required to manage that success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't start with a product; start with a need.
  2. TRULY understand who your buyer is and know their story.
  3. Look for and learn from others who have done it right.
