Tell us about yourself

Hi there! My name is Joseph Luckett, and I'm here to share my incredible journey with you. I was born and raised in St. Charles, Missouri, as 1 of 17 adopted siblings. Growing up wasn't easy for me, as I faced bullying and discrimination because of the color of my skin. I was placed in special education classes and told that I wouldn't be successful without a college education, but I dropped out anyway. Despite the challenges I faced, I never lost my determination and drive. That's why today, I'm proud to say that I'm a #1 International Best Selling Author and the CEO of Zero to 100™, an inclusive EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) networking movement.

You see, my passion lies in connecting people and developing authentic relationships. That's why I co-founded Zero to 100™ with my wife, Carol. Our mission is to provide the education, exposure, and experience needed to develop better networkers, resulting in more diverse and inclusive networking groups and thriving relationships. What motivated me to create Zero to 100™ was a personal experience I had back in 2010. I was invited to a business networking event, but when I arrived, the people working the sign-in table didn't even acknowledge me. When I took a seat, the two guys sitting next to me didn't say a word either. However, a lady did approach me to invite me to a chamber of commerce meeting, which I had no idea what that was. It was then that I realized there was a serious lack of diversity in the networking community and that many people of color felt like they didn't have a voice or the courage to speak up. That's why I'm motivated to help the minority because by doing so, I'm also helping the majority. So, that's my story. I hope it inspired you and showed you the power of determination and hard work!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being recognized for my contributions to the well-being and success of the business community. In 2021, I made history by becoming the first African American in St. Charles' 250-year history to receive the Key to the City for my achievements, which were widely recognized through publications such as Marquis Who's Who in America, Arianna Huffington's Magazine "Thrive Global," St. Louis American, and the front page of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Additionally, I serve as a mentor in the Men of Color Student Success Program for St. Charles Community College.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In 2020, the world was turned upside down by the pandemic. As a start-up founder, I faced the challenge of navigating my company, Zero to 100, through uncertain times. The anticipation for my book, "Zero to 100," was high, but with the pandemic putting everything on hold, I had to make a tough decision. Along with my wife and COO, I decided to delay the release of the book and push back other plans for the company by 1-2 years. However, instead of feeling discouraged, I saw this as an opportunity to make the company even better. We had more time to adjust and adapt to the changing climate and make Zero to 100 more inclusive for everyone. Finally, in April 2021, the book was released, and it quickly became a #1 International Bestseller on Amazon. We are now in the next phase of ZTO, with another exciting project scheduled for release in 2023. We are eager to help even more people with our mission.

Takeaways:

  • The pandemic disrupted many plans, including the release of the book, "Zero to 100."
  • The founder and team pivoted and saw the delay as an opportunity to make the company even better.
  • The book was eventually released and became a #1 international bestseller.
  • The company is now in the next phase of growth, with another project slated for release in 2023.
