Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zachary Bowman, Founder of ZachBowmanArt LLC, located in Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I sell custom artwork and teach students how to become an artist.

Tell us about yourself

I was raised by an art professor who taught over 150 students at our house each week ever since I can remember. Having grown up with artwork all around me, I felt inspired to create my own art. As I have matured, I have found purpose in creating pieces that last longer than photos and capture the thoughts and emotions of the people who commission them. My paintings have been used to heal the broken hearts who have lost loved ones and brought distant families together in ways only a painting can. To me, my artwork has been a vehicle to serve my community and offer more beauty to a world that is bombarded with anxiety and depression.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have painted internationally and worked with people from world-renowned groups, such as curators from the Smithsonian.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing work life and family life. Also, managing funds to balance the highs and lows that exist within the art market.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Recognize what assets you have and properly assess risk within your current market.
  2. Be prepared to fail multiple times and recognize those failures and data that can give you an edge for the future.
  3. Don’t be afraid to sell yourself to everyone you meet! If you believe in your product/service, people feel that authenticity and are more likely to give you a chance.
