Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacqueline Wheat, Owner of YUMMY!, located in Indianapolis, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Baked desserts. People who long for pies like Mama, Grandma & Auntie used to bake. It's nostalgia for the taste buds.…if you could taste nostalgia, it would be YUMMY!

At YUMMY!, desserts aren't just "recipes." They're delightful, delicious desserts with a rich tapestry of over 40 years of family tradition steeped in love and passed on from generation to generation—and now to you. Our PROMISE is that each of our handmade, mouth-watering morsels will awaken your taste buds and keep you coming back for more. Recipe integrity is our guiding principle—we wouldn't have it any other way, and neither should you. Taste tradition in every bite. YUMMY! What every dessert hopes to be.

Tell us about yourself

Our home was a host to numerous Sunday dinners and other family get-togethers. My parents were gracious hosts, and our home was always filled with the joy of children laughing, adults seated at the card table talking-smack, or reclined in the front room chit-chatting about the latest on who-shot-John kind of stories--if you know what I mean. As a wee little girl, I'm not much taller now (4'8"); I'd sit and watch Mama pour her all into preparing daily or special occasion meals. Mama was an EXCELLENT cook, and it showed up in every meal she prepared. She took great care and joy in teaching my two younger sisters and me how to cook food that tasted GOOD. The love and care that Mama took in cooking and her methodologies have forever shaped me and my sole inspiration for wanting to share her hand and homemade love with you...thank you, Mama. What motivates me is seeing and KNOWing that folk enjoys the dessert that I prepare for them. Sharing nostalgia.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've not folded even though I've thought about it many, many times.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Reaching and retaining customers. No business can survive without customers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Let what you do be something that you enjoy.
  2. Operate with integrity.
  3. Be on time!
