Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Jeanvilma, Co-Owner of Yum Crumbs, located in Edgewater, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a dessert topping company. Our toppings bring a pop of taste and texture to complement your favorite treats. Most of our customers are bakers, treat makers, ice cream shops, and bakeries, and recently, our customers have been families enjoying our toppings on ice cream, pancakes, oatmeal, and more. Our toppings are so versatile with our sprinkle meets cookie texture. With over 20 flavors to choose from, you can mix and match and create a large menu of options.

Tell us about yourself

Fun Fact! Yum Crumbs is owned by 7 members. 5 of those shareholders are our 5 children. As a family-run business, we do our best to include them in all the major decisions. We even get advice from our youngest on things like new flavors etc. We've homeschooled our children their whole life, so incorporating the business to include them was a no-brainer for us.

When we started the business, we knew it was going to take some sacrifice, and we needed to know if they would be along for the ride. Our 5 children are our why! We had many struggles prior to the start of Yum Crumbs, and becoming financially free for their future was a must. To give them a life that was outside the rat race.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment in the last 3 years of business was landing multiple distribution channels, allowing our product to be sold to major retail bakeries.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing so far would have to be the transition from small hometown business to small corporate business, if that makes sense. The transition requires different amounts of knowledge, work, money, and overall requirements. It can be exhausting physically and mentally before you get all the missing pieces of the puzzle in place.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with a vivid vision (there's great audible book available about this). Having a clear vision will allow you to stay on task. Many roadblocks or distractions may come your way. If you don't have a clear vision, you will easily go astray.
  2. Stay consistent. To become a business owner, you don't have to be the best content creator, marketing guru, or Forbes top 100. Create something, perfect the process, and stay consistent through the ups and down. As you do this, the rest will flow. You will educate yourself along the way! DON'T GIVE UP.
  3. Be easy on yourself. Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. If you are serious about your business becoming a source of income to bring you financial freedom, you must slow down and enjoy the journey. Even if it blows up overnight, the journey is what will sustain your wealth.
