Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yumi Murayama, founder of YU+ME Design, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

YU+ME Design is a full-service boutique interior design studio. We specialize in mid- to high-end residential interior design and decorating services for single-family homes and condominiums.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in Japan and am inspired by the simplistic, natural essence found in minimalist architecture and design. I pursued my true passion for design by attending the Interior Design program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and earned her Certificate in Interior Design in 2013. Over the next five years, I honed my design and decorating skills while working at a global Danish company in a senior designer/stylist role. Working closely with my clients on design projects inspired me to create my own design company. In 2018 YU+ME Design was born. Definitely, my happy clients motivate me to help them create beautiful homes for them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have established a profitable interior design business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard to set expectations and boundaries with my clients and trades to maintain healthy relationships.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a business management system set up.
  2. A clear understanding of why you are doing it.
  3. know what type of problems you are solving.
