Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanne Gordon, Owner of Your Personal Nutritionist, located in Hampton, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide personalized nutrition services. My specialty is cardiac nutrition to assist and empower adults to prevent or reverse heart disease. I work as a Lifestyle Medicine coach that focuses on lifestyle as well as nutrition. I also help those with chronic inflammation from food sensitivities by providing a food sensitivity test accompanied by an elimination diet to reduce and eliminate symptoms of digestive issues, migraines, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I have a strong desire to work with my clients to assist and guide them with appropriate, individual care and coaching closely. Everyone is unique, and there is no "one size fits all" approach to wellness. I worked as a clinician in a hospital when I first graduated and realized that I was limited with the time and care that I could provide. I decided to start my own consulting company to allow me the freedom and ability to offer personalized care.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Satisfaction of being able to do what I love and share what I know about health and wellness. It can be very rewarding when you spend time with a client who was initially struggling, and then you witness their success and achievements. Everyone has the ability to improve their health. I am honored and proud to be part of their journey.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It can be difficult to balance your work life and business life. When I was working as an employee, you put in your time, and when the day is finished, you're done. When you have your own business, you need to prioritize and learn to say no when needed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify your market (who is the client).
  2. Don't quit when things are difficult.
  3. Remember Why you started.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Owning your own business has its challenges, but it is also very rewarding. You have a lot more control of your schedule. You can decide who to work with and control the volume of work, and you determine the programs offered and how they are delivered.
