Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Abica Dubay, Owner of YOGAST8, located in Louisville, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our mission:

YOGAST8 is a Vinyasa Flow studio committed to helping you feel stronger, calmer, and clearer. We believe in the physical practice of yoga as a healthy, safe, and fun gateway to gaining greater mental clarity. We also believe in having balance in how the body moves, so we are committed to providing all movements from HIIT, to Flow, to Slow. Our instructors will guide you through enjoyable and thoughtful sequences (set to dope playlists) designed to help you find your best physical self, so you are ready to take on every day with more awareness, patience, and laughter. We are committed to creating a comfortable and clean space for you to come and connect on the mat and off. Community is key at the ST8. So let's sweat, laugh, and learn together!

Our clients:

We have everyone from 10 years old to 90 years young, from healthy bodies to recovering bodies and everything in between! There is a type of yoga for EVERYONE, and we pride ourselves on being able to accommodate.

Tell us about yourself

I fell in love with yoga while living in Los Angeles, and I always wanted to open a studio in my hometown of Louisville, KY. After years of daydreaming, sketching, and talking myself in and out of actually going for it- I finally took the step to move home with my husband and two heart-crushingly adorable Black Labs and started putting my plan in place. I met my STELLAR business partners and began to watch my dream become a reality.

I won't sit here and say that "yoga saved my life" like I know it has for some. Instead, yoga has been both a brutal workout for me, full of sweat and strength, and a place to slow down, relax and tame my thoughts, so I'm able to be more present in my every day. This wide range of health that yoga offers is what I wanted to share with my community. Watching folks experience this is what keeps me going. It's truly addictive!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably has to be opening during COVID and being able to provide a safe place for clients to practice and de-stress during a very stressful time. And then being able to grow and sustain as we climb out of the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I'm a people pleaser, so trying to please everyone and knowing it's near impossible weighs heavily on me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just DO IT! Everything you want, I am on the other side of fear!
  2. Feedback is a gift! Not a criticism.
  3. Remember to make time for your physical and mental health. The business won't survive if you barely are.
