Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordan Murdick, founder of Turn the Tide Yoga and Wellness, located in Genelle, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My customers come from all sorts of backgrounds, humans who are looking to connect deeper to their body’s on their healing journey, some who are healing from physical injury, some who have a history of trauma or addiction, and some just looking to make healthier choices towards their well-being.

My business is wellness as a whole, looking at the human not just as their physical layer but treating their mental and emotional well-being as well. Meeting people where they are at and bringing yogic practices and movement into their life in a way that is suitable for how they are showing up daily with unique modifications.

I offer one on one Yoga therapy, group classes, workshops, Reiki sessions, and Thai massage. I am continuously learning and am always bettering my education to create and share more.

Tell us about yourself

Learning yoga and finding my own practice changed my life immensely; it started me off on my wellness journey and allowed me to replace some unhealthy coping mechanisms with ones that nurtured my own traumas and allowed me to gain a better understanding and create a safer space for myself to heal and explore some of those.

What motivates me each day is compassion for the human race and the understanding that everyone is on their own healing journey, and life can be hard. Sharing these tools of wellness with others and allowing them to create space and practices for their own journey inspires me to continue sharing and growing each day myself.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Letting go of the need to be perfect and beginning a journey where the outcome can be different than you maybe once thought and accepting it for the perfect masterpiece it is every day.

Allowing space for ever-changing shifts and movement without holding on too tight to expectations. Much internal growth owning a business to be very proud of.

I recently moved from Vancouver, where I had been growing my business for the past five years, to a more rural area in the Kootenays and will be launching a home business in Genelle, B.C., located between trail and Castlegar in the next year or so, this has always been a dream of mine to have a communal space and home environment, and I look forward to what challenges and triumphs this may bring.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The fact you are not going to please everyone, owning a business puts you in the public eye, it makes you more present online through advertisement and has you in a “limelight” that not everyone considers ideal in their lifetime.

I personally am a more private type of human, working towards less technology, and I like to be present but peaceful in my own space; learning to find a balance between marketing and sharing vs. hibernating and forgetting the world has been an interesting learning experience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Jump in and start; all of my learning lessons have been from trial and error; the sooner you start making mistakes, the sooner you can learn from them.
  2. Keep true to your light, reminders of your why are important to stay motivated, and this why can and most likely will change through time.
  3. Save all your recipes and be gentle on yourself; remember the people who are meant to align with you will; not everyone is meant to align with everyone, don’t let the few who don’t align wreck it for everyone else; keep you light strong.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I’d like to thank everyone who’s supported me and everyone who has followed my busy and not so busy years of creating and sharing with an understanding of life’s ebbs and flows; I’d like to thank my supportive partner for always pushing me to continue toward my goals.
