What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own an online nutrition coaching business to help women heal from disordered eating behaviors such as binge eating, yo-yo dieting, and chronic over-or under-eating. I simultaneously help my clients heal their body image from the scars that diet culture has left on them.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up hearing messages everywhere that "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" and that thinner was ALWAYS better. Before I knew it, I was struggling with an eating disorder in high school. I went to school to be a dietitian from a disordered place.
I actually went because I wanted to know "what the perfect diet was." What I found instead was that I was struggling with disordered eating, and it needed to stop. By the time I graduated, I had a newfound purpose of helping women heal their relationships with food and their bodies. They needed to join me on the other side of disordered eating and enjoy the view.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The success of my clients. I went into this field to help others, and sure enough, it turns out I'm pretty good at it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Marketing. It feels like 90% of where I put my energy.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You have to be good at what you do.
- You have to be passionate about it.
- You have to have an unending amount of grit.
