Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryan Yan, Artist at XIAO Fine Art, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an artist based in Atlanta, GA. My clients are from all over the world (including NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and more). My collector base is a discerning, sophisticated, and accomplished group of individuals who appreciate original art.

Tell us about yourself

I love the process of painting. I find it both challenging and zen at the same time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment can't be defined in monetary terms. Whenever I finish a commission and the collector loves the painting, I feel incredibly accomplished.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being an artist and solopreneur can be quite lonely at times. I paint in solitude, and most of my friends work more traditional jobs, which makes making connections at times difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep the business model simple and out-execute rather than over-strategize.
  2. Keep your eyes on the long term while keeping cash flows healthy.
  3. Build a robust support network, including your best customers, family, fans, etc.
