Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephen Heiner, Content Creator at Writerly Inc., located in Paris, France.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create native-English content for franchisors and small businesses. My clients know the value of fresh and authentic content but are not large enough to have someone dedicated to creating written content.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always enjoyed writing, and after selling a tutoring business some years ago, I was finally free to try writing professionally instead of just as a hobby. I tried creating an agency at first but then realized a single-man shop would be perfect for me. I still can’t believe I get paid to write for people who value my work and that I can do so from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For sure, it’s having built at least one business that has sold successfully. I’ve had smaller exits since, but that first one helped shatter some limiting beliefs and allowed me to focus on my life’s purpose (and discovering what it was in the first place).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It can be solitary. There’s a limited number of people who can really help with your specific challenges. You can always talk in broad strokes to your entrepreneurial friends, and they can even sometimes be very helpful with specific problems, but running companies can sometimes be a solitary affair, and that’s not for everyone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Read! There’s so much free information on the internet and just as much at your library for checkout.
  2. Be clear on your why. To make money is fine as a secondary reason, but no long-lasting and meaningful business is built on that as a primary one.
  3. Don’t forget to enjoy the journey. I’m savoring the early days at my latest startup, and those days, when anything is possible, are filled with so much adventure.
