Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meliza Mokrani, Founder of WORTHY Self-Care Studio, located in Berkeley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is WORTHY Self-Care Studio in Berkeley, CA. Our customers are primarily women seeking to engage in regular, science-backed self-care. We have a substantial population of women who are peri-menopausal and menopausal.

Tell us about yourself

I am a mother, an advocate for equality in wellness, and an entrepreneur.
I am deeply passionate about increasing accessibility to impactful self-care services.

My "why" is very personal. In 2019, after my mother passed away, I realized that despite my efforts to heal my body from the chronic, high-level stress of the three years prior (having a baby, separating from my son's father, caring for my dying mother), I wasn't making any progress. I was stuck in a pattern of overstimulation. I was exhausted, gained 30 lbs, couldn't sleep, and was depressed.

I began to learn more about the nervous system. With the help of a doctor and my therapist, I realized I had a dysfunctional nervous system. I was stuck in a constant state of "fight or flight." I began to use various modalities, such as infrared saunas, red light therapy, and cold plunging, to help regulate my nervous system.

My sleep improved, my mood improved, and I didn't feel depressed anymore. My gut issues were resolved, and I lost the extra weight that I was carrying. Through this experience, I came across many folks who had also helped heal themselves through a radical commitment to their self-care.

The importance of self-care became even more pronounced during the pandemic. I thought about all of the overstimulation we experience in our society and the pressures of being productive. I firmly believe that stress is the root cause of what ails our society. So I set out to ensure everyone can access these transformative services because we are all WORTHY.

I am motivated by the spirit of service to do what I do. It's an absolute honor to hold space for people in the ways that I do, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be of service. I am happiest and most fulfilled when I am connected to servitude.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is knowing that the business I created is a sanctuary and haven for so many people to heal. Healing can look different for different people. Still, I am most moved by knowing that we get to pour love, positivity, growth, and goodness into the lives of the people we interact with.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is juggling all the other hats I wear in life. I'm a single mother and a business owner, and ensuring that I am present, abundant, and connected to both is challenging. I often have to remind myself that I'm doing something impossible and doing a good job!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a plan for your capital. Understand what your runway needs are so that you can sustain unexpected twists and turns as you scale your business.
  2. Keep your self-limiting thoughts in check. Invest in your self-work and address the parts of you that get in your way. This is a long and ongoing journey, but you must be brave enough to handle these things head-on. Owning a business is one of the most growth-provoking experiences of your life. You will be changed as a person, for better or worse. Why not do the work to prime yourself for future growth opportunities?
  3. Remember to rest and take care of yourself. The old saying goes, "you can't pour from an empty cup." When feeling overwhelmed, take a break, walk, do some breathwork, exercise, and listen to music to sign off from what you've got on your plate. I promise it won't go anywhere.
