Subscription Boxes for Kids - World in a Box

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Darya Yatskova, Founder and CEO of World in a Box, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

World in a Box is a geography and culture kit for children. Every box includes fun facts about a country, activities, crafts, games, and STEAM projects. You can explore the world from the comfort of your own home. We offer subscription, gift, and one-time boxes. Our customers are families with children, homeschoolers, aunts, and uncles, as well as grandparents who wish to give something unique, fun, and educational to those little ones in their lives.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in marketing, with a focus on digital media. During the pandemic, I took a UX course, and while studying, I started getting lots of different ideas. One of them was World in a Box. It is where my two passions meet. I've always loved traveling and learning about new countries and cultures. But arts & crafts are just as important to me! That's why you'll notice that a large portion of the box is handmade.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

World in a Box is still very young; it hasn't even been a year since its launch. I think the biggest accomplishment so far is actually starting the business, getting first sales, and building partnerships and strong connections with customers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

So many! Navigating all the processes. For example, before, when I would order something and get it delivered, I didn't really think much about what was behind that, which is a lot. Someone created that product. Someone found the right packaging for it. Someone figured out the best shipment options etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do the research. Learn who your competitors are. Test your product, and get feedback as detailed as possible, including what kind of prices your potential audience will be willing to pay.
  2. Be patient. It's hard to be patient; I get it; you've done lots of hard work and continue doing it, but your sales might not scale right away, so be ready for that. It doesn't mean the product isn't good. There are lots of factors: awareness and finding the right audience.
  3. Don't give up. Test and learn. Look for opportunities. There are government programs that can help you get more exposure. There are opportunities for partnerships with other businesses. Keep searching, keep thinking, and keep looking at your business from different perspectives.
