Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laurie Parres, Founder of Words Delivered, located in Los Angeles, Ca, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We’re Hollywood writers -- the minds behind some of your favorite shows and characters. Our clients are people who want to tap the power of storytelling to advance their businesses and lives. We capture voices to ghostwrite speeches, toasts, comedy roasts, eulogies, and branding.

Tell us about yourself

I've always felt lucky to work in a TV writers' room where every day, we get to develop ideas, write jokes and tell stories. Nine years ago, an event planner asked me to write a toast for a groom, and I saw the need for a vetted source of really funny, talented writers who could tackle people’s creative challenges and help make important moments amazing. So I started Words Delivered and have gotten to do everything from ghostwriting a speech for the CEO of a $70 billion global company to helping brides with their vows.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's such a high when the client is blown away by the result, whether it's a keynote that nails their objective or a eulogy that has 20 people come up afterward to ask for a copy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting the word out! Hiring a ghostwriter can make so many things easier and more fun, but it's not people's first thought. When people get engaged, they think 'venue, menu, cake.' They don't think about what their college roommate might say at the reception when handed the mic! It could be more memorable than the flowers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you're just starting, contact SBDC -- Small Business Development Center. What they offer is amazing!
  2. Cultivate friendships with other small biz owners and swap info.
  3. Stay curious. Opportunities are all around.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

To business owners, I'd say thanks for your hard work in putting something out there that excites you. Hopefully, we're all making the world a better place.

I’d like to give a shout-out to John Carroll at NoProblemMac. He’s saved many a day with his tech savvy and sense of humor. I can’t imagine running my small business without him.
