Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordan Millhausen, Owner of Wonderfly Athletics, located in Arbutus, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Wonderfly Athletics, a premier functional training gym in Baltimore. We work with athletes looking to build mass, jump higher, and run faster. We work with adults looking to lose weight, put on muscle, or just feel healthier. Whatever your goals, Wonderfly Athletics will help you achieve them! We focus on community and connectedness. This skyrockets consistency (the most important aspect of any fitness journey).

Tell us about yourself

I got my personal training certification in college while studying for my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduating, I started doing private trainings on the side until I turned it into a full-fledged sports performance and adult transformation studio. I still work full-time while growing an incredibly successful sports training gym.

The motivation is twofold. I want to be financially free in order to dedicate my time to my future family as well as be able to dedicate my time to help others in need as well as entrepreneurs. I want to work to develop grassroots efforts in underprivileged cities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Took my training business from 2k/month in year 1, to 14k/m in year 2, to 30k/month in year 3, with projected total revenue of $360,000 in year 3. Additionally, I have successfully hired personnel to take over the day-to-day, so I can focus on opening our second location in Fall 2022. All while having a full-time job as an Engineer for one of the most prestigious defense contractors in the world, Northrop Grumman.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You are the person that everyone goes to with problems. You have to be able to solve every problem literally.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't get discouraged, and keep working even if you think you are not making progress.
  2. The consistent mundane effort is the key. Never let off the brakes. Most days, you will feel unaccomplished.
  3. Raise your stress tolerance.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't give up, don't ever give up.
