Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Wolfe, Founder of Wolfe Consulting, located in Bozeman, MT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a brand and business strategist working with creative, purpose-driven leaders. Right now, I work with several steady clients in finance and the outdoor industry, mostly in Montana, where I live. It's fun, dynamic, and exciting, especially when we can see our work having positive impacts on people and the planet.

Going forward, I'm exploring how I might contribute my skills to companies working at the intersection of regenerative food systems and finance.

Tell us about yourself

I was a writer and journalist for nearly 20 years, and somewhere along the line, I wound up doing brand strategy without realizing it. As a writer, I was always looking for the 30k foot view while simultaneously listening for the salient details to make something come alive. I had to surface and weigh other perspectives and the challenges and barriers my characters faced along their journeys. Brand strategy, I learned, is essentially this same process but stripped bare.

It's listening, learning, experimenting, testing, implementing, measuring, and listening all over again. It's asking questions and finding someone's unique strengths to lift them up, or rather, give them a foundation to lift up others. At least that's how I do it. I find it very fulfilling.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping amazing leaders clarify their purpose, articulate their vision, and then bring it all to life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I have two little kids, and I like to climb and ski a lot; my husband also runs his own business (it's a metal fabrication shop). Time is precious for everyone, and right now, it's at a premium around here.

It can be hard to maintain focused time with my kids or exercise, but I know I want to be present for my family and the time outside enables me to do the careful listening and strategic thinking my clients need from me. The balance of life is a delicate, beautiful thing, but it's not always easy. It's a practice.
