Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with JoBeth Evans, social media manager of Williams Angus Beef, located in Hindsville, AR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are beef producers that sell the finished product direct to consumers. Our consumers are people who value high-quality products and supporting local farmers.

Tell us about yourself

We have been farmers for generations, but selling direct to consumers is something we have wanted to do for a long time. During the pandemic, we realized, as beef producers and as consumers, how much we rely on others for our food sources, and we wanted to be part of the movement that changed that.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just that we have pulled this off, a lot goes into having a business like this. We have our hand in every step of the process. It starts years in advance with breeding for quality genetics all the way down to driving to our customer's homes to deliver their beef. It is a huge production, and I am proud of how we have come together to make this happen.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Trying to predict the future. With our business, we have to think about demand two years in advance. That is hard, and missing the mark could significantly impact our business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor or business coach who will be a good support system and help guide you.
  2. Enjoy the work. Make sure that you are growing a business that you love.
  3. Do not be discouraged by no's. You will get a lot of them, and the more you get, the more successful you will be.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I think when starting a business, people get really discouraged when other people do not believe in their company or product, and someone telling them no can really bring them down. In business, you have to believe in what you are doing so much that you are not affected by others' opinions. Just keep working till you get a yes!
