Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with William Rees, founder of Keylight Life + Career Coaching, located in Minnetonka, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an award-winning Inspired Life + Mindset Coach, certified and accredited by The International Coaching Federation. I reunite creative spirits with their core values and visions for their lives so they can quickly and confidently design and refine richly rewarding adventures, both personally and professionally.

Tell us about yourself

I spent decades as a prize-winning filmmaker. In filmmaking, you're constructing an entire world out of thin air to tell a unique story. You thoughtfully design and curate exactly what needs to be shown and heard in every moment on screen, and you edit out whatever isn't relevant or beautiful. So, along those lines, I'm now empowering my coaching clients at Keylight to envision and then star in the exact film they want to be living inside of. It's really life-changing for my clients, especially when they're stuck or insecure, to approach their lives with the poetic mindset that they are a creator, helping their own beautiful biopic.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I recently released a digital workbook called The Keylight Sourcebook, filled with snappy thought exercises to help people frame themselves and their life stories in an instantly inspiring way. The Sourcebook assembles the most important questions and considerations I walk my 1:1 clients through to shift their mindsets into really engaged, adventurous spaces. I structured The Sourcebook a bit like a self-help book but crossed with the beauty of a coffee table book or a cool design magazine. People download it right to their laptops or tablets, and it's this visually stunning resource to walk through and return to whenever someone's stuck and in search of ways to kick-start a more confident and creative way of navigating their life. There's nothing else out there like it, and it's brought my practice to a new level!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Especially as a Coach, you give all the deepest, richest parts of your heart, mind, and soul to your work. So when a new contact doesn't convert to a client, it can feel like a complete rejection of you, yourself. But as I've built my practice and worked with dozens of clients, I have seen and marveled at the magical results I am able to bring to clients from all walks of life. That truth has really helped me stay much more secure in my value and my vision.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Number one, alternate between the tasks that are fun to do and the things that are scary to do. If you stay in any one zone too long, then you're not growing, or you're burning yourself out. Number two, don't be afraid to experiment. Throw things at the wall and see what sticks. You'll learn much more, much more quickly. Lastly, be impeccable with all you do. Every word, image, and email. As a business owner, you're a host, and you're inviting people into your world. Your guests should marvel at how warmly you've thought about every aspect of their experiences.
