Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with William Knight, Direct Response Copywriter at Anglox Publications, located in Bristol, England, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business provides my clients with Direct Response copywriting services. This includes sales letters, VSLs, advertorials, articles, email campaigns, video scripts, SEO web page content, and so much more. I have refined my craft for over 30 years. The majority of my clients are small business owners or entrepreneurs looking to make sales online. These are people who recognize the real value of using my services.

Tell us about yourself

Before I became a full-time professional copywriter, I used to operate a landscape construction business. I have a degree in landscape architecture and started designing gardens for my private clients. However, after ten years, I got bored with it, and so I decided to change my career. First, I lectured at college about marketing and then got more involved in advertising. After reading the works of some of the great copywriting masters, such as Gary Halbert, Clayton Makepeace, Eugene Schwartz, and Claude Hopkins, my new career was defined. It was the best decision I ever made.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to work from home and choose the jobs that I want to work on and the clients I want to work with is my biggest achievement. I really am my own boss as I am able to decide when I want to work and when I don't. My business allows me to experience a true sense of freedom.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It depends on how you set your business up. If you work IN your business, then you will become a slave to it. If you work ON your business, then you will call the shots. The hardest thing is making the transition. It takes time and planning, and you must be prepared to let others do the mundane tasks. You need to try to get to a point where you are only doing the things in your business that you enjoy doing. That's how you become successful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

In order of importance, I would say:

  1. Give great customer service. Over-deliver and always ensure your customer is happy. Do that, and they'll remember you and come back time and again.
  2. Focus on your marketing. Get the word around, build a brand, be seen, and get recommended. Whatever it takes to stay out in front.
  3. Manage your finances. Never take your eye off the ball when it comes to money. It's a precious resource and should be respected. Invest it if you can, make it work for you, and make sure you build a nice pot of gold for your retirement.
