Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Della Woods, MS, NCC, Founder of Wild Side Therapy, LLC., located in Hood River, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder and sole provider of Wild Side Therapy, LLC. It is a telehealth psychotherapy practice for teens and adults seeking individual therapy. I specialize in addressing anxiety disorders and provide clients with evidence-based techniques to overcome self-limiting beliefs and unhelpful and anxious thinking.

Tell us about yourself

My interest in psychology was piqued when I was 14 years old and undergoing cancer treatment. It was then I became an observer of how my inner experience could influence my external world. Fast-forward to three years of post-graduate school, I honored the fact that I had what it takes to become an entrepreneur and created Wild Side Therapy, LLC.

Friends would describe me as independent and chronically late to meet-ups. With that said, entrepreneurship allows me to set my own schedule rather than my time being controlled by an agency, and live by my own values while developing a meaningful career.

Counseling is an inherently rewarding field, and witnessing clients make desired changes in their lives motivates me to continue the work I do. Living by one's authentic values, in my opinion, is the key to a fulfilling life. If I can help others live a life that is meaningful to them, I feel I am making a small contribution to helping raise the consciousness of the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner so far was getting started. I had little business experience prior to this. Building a business is hard work and initially an investment with little return. To see something I created to launch and take off is a thrilling joy on another level.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest thing I've discovered that comes with becoming a business owner is dealing with uncertainty. I can consult with other professionals, but at the end of the day, no one can tell me what to do, which is great, but all responsibility falls on me to make decisions. It takes a lot of self-reflection, research, and confidence. With time and practice, I hope to become a master at facing uncertainty.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. You'll never feel totally prepared, and that's okay because you will learn the answers as you go.
  2. Find a mentor in your field and find a mentor in business. Connecting with a great CPA will teach you a lot about how to run a successful business by understanding taxes.
  3. Know your worth. Understand what you offer to others and what it is that makes your services unique.
