Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephan Goodale, owner of Wild Growth Wellness, located in Kamloops, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help people make drastic and long-term changes with a combination of diet coaching, strength, and habit/mindset coaching. I'm the person you go to when you want to outgrow yourself.

Tell us about yourself

I started my personal diet and fitness journey at 273 lbs, over 50% body fat. I was an alcoholic and drug addict for nine years, and after a series of consecutive rock bottoms, I decided to start taking care of myself and got sober. With all the extra free time and the sudden realization that if I wanted to live a long full life, I'd need to start taking care of myself, I decided to start looking into diets and studying the body to give myself a fighting chance. After a few failed attempts and some diet-juggling, I settled on the Low Carb / Keto approach and wound up losing 78 lbs in just over six months. From there, I decided that if my stubborn butt could get into shape, then why couldn't I help other people do it too?

I went and took a myriad of courses on nutrition and physiology and settled on Precision Nutrition's Level 1 program. PN's Level 1 is great because it focuses on the habits of being healthy and is less strict than a meal plan can be. However, I highly believe that running a meal plan in conjunction with habit coaching is the best way to get guaranteed success. So my approach is to back you up with a meal plan that's guaranteed to help you lose weight while we also get to the bottom of your habits and attitude toward food, diet, exercise, sleep, scheduling, and all other factors that help impact your ability to focus on a healthy diet.

In the five years, I've been doing this, I've helped over a thousand clients reach and often exceed their goals for diet and fitness. Weight loss is my specialty, and I've worked with clients with all sorts of metabolic issues like Diabetes, PCOS, Crohn's Disease, Diverticulitis, gall bladder issues, extreme food sensitivities, and a myriad of other particular needs and wants for their specific diets. We work together to figure out the least invasive way to get you to see results at a decent and consistent pace. My main goal as a coach is to shoulder as much of the burden as possible so that you don't feel overwhelmed or like you're changing too many things at once.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say the impact that I have on my clients post-program. I get so many follow-up messages years after we worked together thanking me for giving them the tools and the knowledge to maintain their fitness and exceed their goals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing when to stop! I'm a token workaholic, and I find myself up at 3 am doing projects and putting some of my own rest and relaxation on the back burner. Nothing a power nap can't fix, though!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get yourself educated on your Ideal Client. Know them inside and out so you can best serve them.
  2. Don't undervalue yourself. Make sure you're charging what you feel is fair for your time.
  3. Never stop learning. I have nine certifications and more in the future on my radar. No matter how much you know, it's never really "enough."

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

No matter how hard things get, remember that there's someone else who would give up anything to be where you're at.
