Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Wight, Owner of Wight Tea Company, located in Baltimore, MD,USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We make exciting loose-leaf tea blends with adventurous flavor combinations for food lovers who care about quality and taste. While we sell online and at our shop, we also offer wholesale for the service industry, retail, and corporate gifts.

Tell us about yourself

My brother and I have a seven-year age difference and very little in common growing up. It wasn't until I had graduated from college that we started drinking tea together on my trips home and built our friendship because of it. Now, I am motivated each day to get up and work with tea because of my passion.

I love every minute of not only working with tea but learning and growing my business also. I've never felt bored or stagnant with what we have created and continue to create.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Just this past spring, I was in Las Vegas for a trade show, and I was invited to a dinner with other tea industry leaders. It was an invite-only dinner for only a few people, and the intent wasn't sales but instead to just come together as leaders in the new wave of tea. We were all doing our own thing, but we were all also recognized as bringing tea into a modern light.

I felt so special to be there. I felt like all my hard work and sticking to my vision, and not just caving to others' dated perceptions and ideas of tea was all worth it. I'm so fortunate to know and be connected in a friendly and positive way with those colleagues.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the balancing act you're always playing. And it's also hard to accept that most of the time, your life won't be balanced at all. Business life, social life, and family life.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you are looking to start a business today:

  1. Know that slow growth is okay! So many of the stories we hear about businesses are overnight successes, and it can feel like that is what you have to do. You don't. Take your time.
  2. Know that you will have to choose your business over your social and family life sometimes, and once that happens, some relationships won't survive. The people that love and support you will.
  3. Just the same as knowing that slow growth is okay, also know that the group of people who have a business and are traveling and living amazing lives are a small pool. Businesses take lots of work. It's essentially a newborn baby.
