Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in publication but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rowena Carr-Allinson, Editor In Chief of WHEREVER, located in Loule, Portugal.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a luxury lifestyle print magazine for ex-pats.
Tell us about yourself
I lived in Paris and was freelancing for big corporate brands and also travel writing for lifestyle magazines. I'd often get free magazines on my doorstep, but they were awful. When I moved to Portugal and saw the well-traveled, well-educated, and wealthy crowds, I thought they deserved something good to read. I also wanted to create another outlet for my fellow writers with so many magazines shutting down. I'm motivated by building something that creates value and gives people an income - and to leave something for my kids. I'm also happy to be making something that is inspirational and beautiful, and that encourages people to take time out of the digital vortex! I don't believe the print is dead. If you have the right readers, it's definitely the noblest of media.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Getting from the idea stage to the 30.000 copies distributed. Making partnerships with great brands and managing to break even - running editorial, sales, and distribution more or less solo. I know I have help, so things can get scaled up!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The stress - the weight of it all on your shoulders! Being too far across the bridge to blackout, yet not quite on the other side yet.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do it before you have kids!
- Be ready not to earn a bean for a while.
- Find an idea that can be scaled up.
