Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness  but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lulu DePina, Owner of West Adams Pilates, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA .

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a small boutique Pilates Studio that offers group classes and privates at an affordable rate for the West Adams Community and beyond.

Tell us about yourself

I've been certified since 2010, but in May of 2021, I bought a reformer for my home because the Pandemic made me sedentary and depressed. I wanted to get moving again. One reformer slowly turned into five, and I went from teaching three friends to 75 clients in under five months. I finally moved to a commercial space on September 9, 2022.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My goal is to bring affordable Pilates to the community. Pilates is often overpriced and not accessible to all. I want all bodies to feel welcome in this space. My studio offers a warm, cozy atmosphere with only (5) reformers, so you're never lost in a large class.

We offer beginner classes thru advanced and even have a senior class twice a week. It's been a complete honor and privilege to watch my clients grow both physically, emotionally, and spiritually. A lot of them had never tried Pilates before because they couldn't afford it, and now they come 2 - 3 times per week!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Doing all of the things, admin, scheduling, billing, teaching, janitorial, taxes, payroll... you name it! But it's all so worth it, and I was learning to delegate and hand over tasks so I could enjoy teaching.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get your paperwork ready first! Know what you're getting into and have a backup plan.
  2. Find what makes you unique and run with it.
  3. Don't copy anyone else, and give credit where credit is due.
