What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a freelance web developer, I work for a few digital agencies, and I also have some clients of my own. The Digital Agencies I work for have bigger clients, for example, an at-home nursing company called Sonas Home Health and a business insurance company called Embroker. My own clients are small businesses like a roofing business and a bagel sandwich/coffee shop.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on my business in 2016, a year after I graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems. I started getting my own clients on UpWork, and that kickstarted my independent Web Development career, although, in college, I had worked on a few websites professionally as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to work remotely and make my own hours for as long as I have. I've been running this one-man development shop for 6+ years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is managing your own time, money, and taxes. It's hard because you can't undersell yourself or your services which I have definitely done in the past. You might need to do that to get your first job, but after you have a good reputation, continue to be confident in your work and your pricing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you are offering a product that you are confident is useful, and stay consistent with your work.
  2. If you are offering services like I am, make sure your skills are honed and you do market research.
  3. Stay consistent and believe in what you do!
