What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a Gourmet Bakery in Charlotte, NC. We sell small, seasonal pastries, Artisan Bread, and custom cakes/wedding cakes. Our customer base is sprinkled with a variety of different folks. Between the storefront and private orders, we get customers from all walks of life.
Tell us about yourself
I've been in the industry since I was fifteen. I always knew I wanted to be a pastry chef. It took a few years to realize I wanted to own my own bakery. I was an executive pastry chef at a fine dining-restaurant here in Charlotte. I was starting to hit my head on the ceiling, and I realized there wasn't anywhere else for me to work in Charlotte at the time. That's when I decided I'd start the journey to opening Wentworth & Fenn. I truly love what I do and the bakery. My staff and our customers make me proud to bake and show up day to day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Knowing my staff is well taken care of and the customers are getting quality pastries.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Wearing all the hats. It's very difficult to juggle everything that comes with running a business and finding balance with my personal life.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it. You'll regret not trying.
- Don't be too proud to ask for help.
- Be organized and thorough.
