Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Cook, Founder of Wellness Writer, located in Westminster, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wellness Writer and The Wellness Copy Shop support health practitioner entrepreneurs with copywriting services, copywriting templates, and health content creation. Our clients are functional medicine practitioners, naturopathic doctors, nutritionists, and other wellness professionals who are growing their businesses in creative ways online.

Tell us about yourself

I thought I wanted to be a Naturopathic Doctor (ND), but it turned out that I actually wanted to be a writer. After graduating with my ND, I saw my colleagues struggling to create content for their businesses and started blogging for them. Online marketing changed quickly, and I saw them needing better websites, lead magnets, email funnels, and sales pages. So I learned how to write those too. I became a StoryBrand Certified Guide in 2019 so that I could leverage the StoryBrand framework for the health and wellness community. I believe that when practitioners are supported in creating copy and content, they can touch more lives and have a bigger impact on the world. That's why I do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So many wellness practitioners struggle to find time to create nurturing content for their businesses that the smartest thing I have done in my business so far has been to create a monthly subscription of health content ready for practitioners to personalize and share. Since I am a solopreneur without a team behind me, this monthly subscription is a scalable offer that has allowed me to help more practitioners with the same investment of time. There are so many different ways that we can "scale" our businesses, and I believe that not all of them need to involve a team.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, I absolutely need to stay creative and be willing to change or pivot at any moment. One example is my monthly subscription of health content. I started that subscription when it was perfectly fine to post static images and captions to social media. Now that almost all of the social platforms have shifted to emphasize video, I need to look at pivoting that subscription to support my members in creating videos too. Even though I say this is the "hardest" thing about being a business owner, it is also the most fun!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do something you love. If you aren't having fun, nobody is going to want to do business with you.
  2. Get crystal clear on who you serve. This is the only way to attract people you enjoy working with, and it makes messaging, copywriting, and marketing so much easier.
  3. Get help. I have taken more courses, coaching programs, and certifications than I can count. Every time I have invested in help, it has put my business on a better trajectory of growth.
