Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wendy Traylor, Owner of Wellness With Wendy, located in Katy, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Wellness With Wendy is an online fitness platform. I provide on-demand workouts designed with the perfect balance of sculpting exercises and cardio to help my clients feel stronger, toned, more energized, and empowered. I’m also a Certified Nutrition Coach, and I support my clients by educating them about making smarter food choices to reach their health and wellness goals.

Tell us about yourself

I am a blogger (wendytraylor.com), Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach, fitness instructor, wife, momma of 2, and business owner. I absolutely LOVE to share nutrition, fitness, and wellness solutions so people can move more, eat better, feel better, and look better!

My journey to Wellness With Wendy started with my own experience. For 18 years, I worked in Corporate America, and every one of my corporate jobs was fast-paced and super stressful. The stress only intensified when I got married and had children because I had to balance my work and home responsibilities. It was during those intense years that I discovered how much exercise and nutrition helped me find focus, balance, and self-esteem. Keeping up with my health and wellness literally saved my sanity, and when my last corporate job left me by way of a massive corporate downsizing, I decided to follow my passion for fitness.

First, I became a fitness instructor and worked for the company that helped me get through my worst corporate days. It was a perfect way to give back to others what I’d received personally—focus, balance, self-esteem, and a sense of community that I cherished. I also became a blogger, Certified Personal Trainer, and Certified Nutrition Coach because I had a deep desire to learn more about fitness and nutrition and share that knowledge with others.

In 2020, my beloved fitness studio closed, and I was forced to start writing a new chapter in my life. That’s when Wellness with Wendy was born! I’ve been writing, teaching classes, and coaching ever since. It’s been truly rewarding to do a job that’s fulfilling in so many ways.

My business fulfills me and motivates me because I know how movement through fitness and proper nutrition can change lives. I witnessed the effects in my own life, and I want to help others (especially women) who are stretched for time and struggle to fit in their own self-care as they manage a million other things. My kids also motivate me because I want to influence them to make healthy choices when it comes to fitness and nutrition. I’m leaving a legacy for them now. Part of that legacy includes giving them a strong foundation and knowledge base when it comes to health and wellness.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’ve had the amazing opportunity to do collaborations and partnerships with brands like Gatorade and teach classes at the global headquarters for Pinterest. Those opportunities validated me as a top-tier fitness professional, exposed me to incredible individuals, and helped me grow. I’ll never forget those experiences, and I’m truly grateful for them!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think it’s so hard to be patient with the process and to keep going even when it seems like you’re not making progress in your business. It may take years to reap the benefits of your hard work. But it will pay off eventually. You must keep going and not give up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don’t compare yourself or your journey to anyone else. Appreciate the unique gifts that you have and focus on how you can share them with the world!
  2. Be consistent. Show up for yourself and your business every day, even when you don’t feel like it.
  3. Always look for opportunities to learn and grow. Learn from your peers, learn from others outside of your industry, and learn from yourself (especially via failures and/or disappointments). You’ll evolve as a business owner by prioritizing your personal development and continual learning.
