What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own Wellington Veterinary Hospital in Markham, Ontario, and my clients are cat and dog owners.
Tell us about yourself
I have loved animals and have wanted to care for them since I was in grade school. I am constantly overjoyed by the chance to go to work and help pet owners care for their furry family members.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Staying in business for 22+ years and not burning out is a huge accomplishment, but my biggest just recently happened. I took the plunge and volunteered for several weeks in Kharkiv, Ukraine, during the war and within the hot zone. It was so very fulfilling in the long run. At times scary, but I look forward to going back and helping out.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Unfortunately, the hardest part is always human resources. Dealing with team members who can't get along or have unrealistic expectations.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't wait too long; if you have a good idea and a passion, go for it.
- Find something you are so interested in that long hours pursuing that interest won't seem like work.
- Be prepared for significant unexpected challenges and be ready to push through them. You will come out the other end stronger and more successful.
