Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura DeBoer, owner of Well + Wild Nutrition, located in Morrison, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help mamas nourish their bodies for preconception and pregnancy and help them regain energy and vibrancy in postpartum and beyond. I use nutrition and lifestyle tweaks with a whole-body, whole-food approach to help empower and create lasting change.

Tell us about yourself

My journey to making this my career has been a long one. Right after college, I experienced a lot of symptoms such as acne, weight gain, extreme fatigue, and hair loss. I changed my diet and lifestyle, and my world changed. I felt and looked completely different- like I could show up for my life again. It was an important shift for me. Years later, I became a mom and realized my health and longevity were so important. I can't be my best for my kids if I am not feeling my best. I hear many women complain of symptoms that may be common but are not normal.

My passion is to help women and mamas find freedom from their symptoms so they can really show up and be present each day for their children and chase their goals. Additionally, pregnancy and postpartum are really tough seasons to navigate. The available info is limited and conflicting, so I also want to help women walk through those amazing seasons without confusion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am proud of myself for starting a business at home with two kids in a pandemic. It wasn't the easiest season to do it in, but I built it and am proud of it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me right now is holding all the different spinning plates. As a business owner, I am responsible for the administrative tasks, finances, content creating, marketing to get clients in the door, continuing education, and of course, showing up for my clients with their individualized nutrition, supplement, and lifestyle plans as well as accountability and encouragement. I work during the fringes of motherhood. I love what I do and am thankful to have something I'm passionate about, but it's a tough balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. You don't have to jump all the way in at once, but put your dreams into action! Even a little at a time is great, and it will start to take shape.
  2. Make a plan. Direction is so important. I have so many big ideas and dreams, and without a plan, I have so much to do when I sit down to work that I can't focus. Pick something and go after it.
  3. Take care of yourself! You won't be your best if you don't have your health. Eat whole foods, including plenty of protein, move your body, hydrate, and do not sacrifice sleep! Business owners love to give up sleep, but it's the golden ticket to keeping healthy!
