Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Frank Maricle, Co-Owner of Well Rooted Farms, located in Bend, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a local meat and egg company, and we supply our food products to people in our area and along the West Coast. We run a produce U-pick, manage three self-serve farm stands, sell products wholesale to restaurants and grocery stores, as well as ship our meat products direct to homes through the mail.

Tell us about yourself

I am a first-generation farm/rancher, and my wife and I wanted to create a business that keeps our agricultural products serving people that we can connect with on a personal level. I love providing healthy food for families and seeing people enjoy the quality of our products.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far in my career is reaching 7,000 acres of hay ground covered in one season which took me nine years to build up to. This is through my first company, Maricle Land & Livestock Inc. In my first season, I farmed 100 acres in my area, but now we have accounts in 4 counties.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest challenge I consistently face is the lack of capital to purchase tools and infrastructure to expand my business and improve profit margins.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a good team.
  2. Understand your clients and their needs.
  3. Be honest.
