Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Joshua Lennon, Founder of Well Rested MD LLC., located in Germantown, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help people sleep. I am a board-certified sleep physician, and as part of my clinical practice, I have created a podcast and a digital online course to help those who want to fall asleep without difficulty, stay asleep across the night, and wake feeling Well Rested.

Tell us about yourself

Even after completing a fellowship in adult and pediatric sleep medicine, I could not appreciate the true depth of need for those with insomnia. It is such a common struggle, yet many individuals don't speak with their medical providers about it regularly, or if they do, they typically do not receive the standard of care - which is non-drug therapy. I wanted to create resources for individuals struggling with their sleep that they could access anywhere, anytime, in order to learn how to manage their sleep challenges effectively and independently with evidence-based best practices.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm always ecstatic to see sleep wellness taken seriously in the media, and it's always an honor to be asked to contribute to the public discussion. But my proudest moments come from hearing directly from listeners of my podcast or students in my course who've experienced such positive transformations in their sleep and how that has impacted the rest of their waking lives.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I wear so many hats. My biggest challenge is always finding time. Working full-time in a busy clinical practice, teaching at the university, research, writing, consulting - it is definitely hard to make time for passion projects, especially when it's a business and there is so much riding on its success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understanding your "Why" is hard to overemphasize.
  2. Run projections for your business outlook of what would be a worst-case scenario, what a windfall would be, and what is actually likely to happen - don't let expectations twist your acceptance of reality.
  3. Ask for help often.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Wake up at the same time every day, only go to bed when you are sleepy, get out of bed if you are not sleeping, and if you are still struggling, do not hesitate to talk to a board-certified sleep physician. It's harder to do everything (in business and in life) when you are not waking Well Rested each day.
