Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Kerr, owner of Bliss Botany, located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a wedding and event florist who also dabbles in custom bouquets and sympathy arrangements.

Tell us about yourself

After leaving another career, I was looking for something that would access my creative side. I ended up doing a Floristry course and apprenticeship at a Floral shop. From there, Bliss Botany was born. I went out on my own and haven’t looked back since.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far was probably this past wedding season. Having an almost full roster of weddings this summer/fall was a challenge and a great accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the amount of time it takes to invest in your business. It always takes way more time than you think.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your market.
  2. Use your tools (Instagram, website, etc.)
  3. Maintain good relationships with your clients.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting a business is daunting, but being realistic about your expectations and adjusting to client needs as they arise will ensure you are successful.
