Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wendy Eaton, Founder of WE Empower, located in Newburyport, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Body Confidence Coach who empowers women to ditch the scale, stop hating their bodies and live a confident body life. My goal is to support women to go from insecure and unhappy in their bodies to confident and comfortable. I help women do this through mindset work, self-talk strategies, journaling, meditation, and boundary setting. We unpack everything from diet culture, familial relationships, clothing, how to create a mantra, and so much more. Reframing how women feel in their bodies and how they see their bodies is vital to helping women feel more confident and accepting of their bodies.

Tell us about yourself

I am an eating disorder survivor who suffered from body hatred, insecurity, and negative self-talk for over ten years. I was in a constant cycle of dieting, berating my body, and telling myself that I wasn't enough as I was. I was constantly chasing a smaller size, thinking that it would bring me happiness. It never did. I started this business so that I could help other women ditch their insecurity and start feeling accepting and confident in their bodies. I am motivated each day to help women not miss out on life moments because of their insecurity in their bodies. I don't want women to hide in a coverup by the pool like I did so many times. I don't want women to feel like they have to earn their food or work out every single day to accept their bodies. I want women to feel confident and empowered in their bodies, and that is what motivates me to do this work and help as many people as I can.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say hearing from clients that my work has made an impact. I had a former client message me yesterday, telling me that one session helped completely change her mindset about her body. It was so emotional for me to know that I had made such an impact. The impact I have on helping others is my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The biggest challenge for me is wanting to help everyone! Deciding to work on your relationship with your body is a little bit like deciding to go to therapy; you have to make a choice on your own and commit to doing the work. I want to help everyone, but some folks are not ready to shift their mindset around body acceptance. They want to try another diet or change their body instead of working to change their mindset and reframe their relationship with their body. It is also hard to make time for all the things I want to do and the programs I want to offer. There are a lot of strategies that go into it, and often I lead with my excitement first.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do market research! You could have great skills and expertise, but make sure that you are bringing people what they want. This helps you tailor programs and offerings and helps you focus your business.
  2. Be patient! Nothing happens overnight; it takes time to grow a business. Don't compare yourself to others; your growth will look different from others, and that is okay!
  3. Follow your passion. People might think it is insane or not understand it, but if your heart is called to it, you can do it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am so passionate about helping women feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies. If you are ready to go from insecure to confident, ready to go from hiding in coverups to strutting your stuff on the beach, then I am the coach for you. I will help you unlock new tools and mindsets that can support you in changing how you think and talk about your body. I am here to help! I also am a group fitness instructor that supports inclusive movement for all body types. I also have a chihuahua named Jerry, who I love to pieces!
