What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a surf and health coach. I facilitate empowerment through physical challenges. Customers are anyone who wants to experience surf, but my specific demographic is women and teens going through major transitions in their lives.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved the ocean and, as a teen, was given the opportunity to spend time in the wilderness. This experience changed my life. I learned to teach surf by volunteering for an Indigenous women's surf retreat 5 years ago. During covid, I got asked to teach surf lessons and found that I am really good at what I do.

Now, I get to share the knowledge I've collected over these past 16 years of surfing and reciprocate, holding space for others as they grow and challenge themselves. I love to see the smiles and breakthroughs that happen when women face their fears and dreams.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have created a sustainable living doing what I love to do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Logistics and numbers are not my strong points. But I am learning and growing how to be more efficient in this arena.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you LOVE what you do. Starting a business can be hard, so it has to be worth it.
  2. Have patience. If you are doing what you are meant to do, it will work out.
  3. Don't forget to enjoy life. Sometimes with our own business, there is no clock-out time. We have to make that time.
