Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Whitney Owens, owner of Waters Edge Counseling, located in Savannah, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a private group practice, we provide mental health services to our local community through individual, couples, and group therapy. With the increasing difficulties and stressors in our world, it is even more important than ever that people care for themselves and address mental health concerns.

Tell us about yourself

I am a group counseling practice owner and private practice business coach. I started my counseling practice because I am passionate about seeing the change in clients and was unable to find a job. So, I started my own company. Over time, my waitlist grew as the needs in our community grew. Then, I started to hire therapists. We now have 11 clinicians.

When not running the practice, I offer business coaching to other practice owners. I saw a need for a coach to specifically help faith-based practice owners know how to market and grow their practice. This is my passion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My team tells me that this is the best job they have ever had. The therapist says they love coming to work and find it to be a safe haven in their lives. We are like family in how we support one another and have fun together.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of my biggest challenges is balancing my personal and professional life. When you own a business, it is easy for that to trickle into your personal life. You must set healthy boundaries to be able to enjoy both.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay Persistent. - Your business will have ups and downs. They all do. Make sure you set a foundation and stick to your core objectives even when they feel rocky. Things will eventually level out.
  2. Watch your numbers and track everything - I often hear business owners say what is going on in their business but do not really know. It is important that you have the data to back it up. Data lets you know what is working and what isn't working. Then, you know where to put your time and energy. When you don't have the facts, you end up wasting time and money.
  3. Have fun! - You started your business because you love it! So, enjoy it!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

One of my college professors shared a quote that has always stuck with me: "Do something you love so much you would do it for free, but do it so well you get paid to do it." That is how I do my business and make decisions.
