Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Khyati Desai-Seltzer, Infant Massage Instructor of Vyana Infant Massage, LLC., located in Arlington, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach parents how to improve their baby's health, bonding, and happiness through the ancient Indian practice of baby massage. Baby massage, when practiced daily, alleviates gas, and congestion, improves sleep and digestion, increases bonding and relaxation, decreases postpartum depression and breastfeeding challenges, and does so much more.

You can transform a baby's brain and how its DNA is expressed through this practice. My customers are parents and families of babies and toddlers.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in India but grew up entirely in America, growing up in Louisiana. I've spent most of my career working in under-resourced communities and came to entrepreneurship when I felt burned out and disconnected from my family. The example I set for my two girls in pursuing their dreams and seeking a life of value, freedom, and flexibility where both family and career matter is what motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Teaching more and more families the art and science of baby massage in the west is my biggest accomplishment as an entrepreneur. It's not about recognition or rewards.

I'm fulfilled knowing that families feel supported and empowered in making lasting changes for their children and themselves in a country where we see massage and holistic practices as luxuries instead of healthcare and preventative practice.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a mom and juggling businesses is incredibly challenging, in addition to struggling the first few years to make your business viable and successful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep a part-time job, if possible, as you pursue your business.
  2. Pursue all opportunities, and say yes!
  3. Yet be selective to avoid wasting time and energy.
