Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in audio production but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mary Catherine Jones, the Founder & Executive Producer of Voice Over Vermont, located in Shelburne, VT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Voice Over Vermont is a boutique recording studio with a focus on audiobook recording and production. We work with authors from all over the United States to create audiobook editions of their memoirs or other non-fiction books using their voices. We also work with hundreds of professional narrators when the project warrants a special voice (many works of fiction would fall into this category).

Tell us about yourself

There is nothing more powerful than a story. Recently, a friend asked me how I found time to read every day. I replied that it was not even something I thought about - it was as inherent to my daily routine as eating! I've been working in the world of books all my adult life, from being the director of sales and marketing for an independent publisher for many years to being a founding board member of the Children's Literacy Foundation to leading musical story times at our local library. It was during one of those story hours that I was introduced to the idea of being a professional voice talent. What? I get to read books for others to listen to? Sign me up! It didn't take long for me to start working with authors to help them narrate their own stories - with me right by their side to guide them. I hop out of bed with a true bounce, knowing I will get to hear another story!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing from being a one-person show to employing many freelance editors and voice talents for my projects. I had no idea how great it would feel knowing that I was helping someone else grow their business as I grew mine.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

While I love "being my own boss," - I'm afraid I can sometimes be a bit difficult to work for... 😊 I continue to learn how to "leave it at the office," - which is right here in my home!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Meet with your local SBA and develop a business plan. Even if you believe you will only enjoy a modest income, get those foundations super stable. Related to that, register your business with the state and get an EIN right away - you don't want to put your SSN out there!! Finally - learn how to "calendar block." If you don't know what I'm talking about - google it. It gives you the structure you need to get business done.... and grow.
