Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Virginia Runko, Founder of DC Psychology and Sleep Services, located in Bethesda, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a clinical psychologist in a solo private practice. I provide evidence-based psychotherapy and behavioral sleep medicine services, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), to adults ages 18+.

Tell us about yourself

I got into psychology because I wanted to help others, and I found it intellectually stimulating. The longer I work, the more grateful I am to have fallen into something that feeds my intellectual passions and has truly made an impact on others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to establish myself to the point where my services provide me with job security.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing others. For that reason, I decided to forgo forming a group practice and remain a solo practice.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ensure the product/service is excellent.
  2. Seek help and advice early in the process as well as throughout the process.
  3. Have a good website.
