Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cameron Smith, Voice Instructor of Vibe Vocal Studio, located in American Fork, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The studio is a safe, creative space where I teach people how to sing with proper technique. Learning singing techniques allows them to sing songs they love without straining or tiring their voices and expands their abilities for musical expression. My customers are primarily local singers (some online across the country) of different ages and backgrounds. Anyone can learn to sing well if they have the desire and the time!

Tell us about yourself

I'm a professional singer who's been working as an entertainer for 14 years. I moved to my home state of Utah in 2019 and have been teaching other people to sing based on my years of experience and my vocal pedagogy education with the Institute for Vocal Advancement.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing students every week who leave lessons smiling and excited because they can finally sing that song they've always had trouble with, and it finally feels good.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning where my healthy boundaries are in terms of schedule and availability to customers. I love accommodating people and helping them have the best experience, but sometimes what I need as a person conflicts with what clients need, and I have to navigate a middle ground or stand by my studio policies. I hate disappointing people!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Remember that once your passion or hobby becomes a business, it's no longer only a passion or hobby - you're a business owner now! You'll spend less of your time on the part you've always loved and more on branding, marketing, customer support, finances, taxes, and scheduling. Everything that comes with running your own business unless you can pay someone else to do it - in which case you're also a Manager! Personally, I've grown to really enjoy the digital marketing and branding side of things. Once I got through the stress of the learning curve, I found the work interesting and creative in ways I didn't expect.
