What's your business, and who are your customers?
I teach vet professional skills to vets and help them find great jobs, and I teach leadership to vet practice owners and help them find great doctors to join their team.
Tell us about yourself
VetX started life as a book, then a course, then a community, and has grown ever since. I want to help practices grow a healthy, sustainable workplace culture where everyone can win. We’ve not done well at that over recent times - improved leadership and communications skills are changing that narrative. What motivates me is the joy that high trust and high respect teamwork can bring. Everyone needs to experience this version of “work.” It’s a blast.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing a culture and creating a place where my team is growing together. Roundwood Vets has had its fair share of ups and downs. But it is a place where anything is possible.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Saying no to ok people or opportunities. (Not doing so means saying no to awesome people and opportunities.)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be prepared to graft.
- Hire people who complement your skills, not your ego.
- Don’t waste time selling stuff to people who cannot or will not pay.
