Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Velma Garnes, Owner of Velmanator, located in Columbus, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach ALL low-impact, effective virtual workouts with minimal time, equipment, and space for women 40+.

Tell us about yourself

What got me started was two-fold: my mom was my first client. I inherently knew what she was doing at the time was totally wrong, even though I was only 17. My mom had 10 of us and was having problems getting rid of the weight between pregnancies. I became her trainer for the most part. It was how I discovered how much I loved helping people feel really good by being there for them.

My oldest sister also had a friend who taught Jazzercise at remote locations, and as 'payment' for helping her set up and break down her equipment, she would let me participate in her classes for free. So I would basically follow her around the city.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Opening my own studio that I ran by myself for over four years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing that you can't want the results you're training people for more than the people want for themselves.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Your business only grows to the extent that you do, so always be open to new growth and opportunities. If you are stunted, then your business will be too.
  2. Don't chase money, fame (notoriety), or success, but family, friends, and quality product that truly gets results. It's pursuing the latter that brings you the former.
  3. Always be kind, but don't be a doormat.
