Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathy Davis, Founder of VegInspired, located in Bushnell, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I founded VegInspired and the Eat More Plant Academy to educate, inspire, and empower people to Eat More Plants. My clients of the Eat More Plants Academy mentorship are busy professionals who are looking to achieve their personal and professional goals by leveraging the power of plant-centered eating.
Whether their goal is personal (weight loss or wellness) or professional (productivity and energy to show up in their business), our proven approach to adopting healthy habits will help them accelerate their results.
Tell us about yourself
I have been eating and creating vegan meals for over eight years. I created VegInspired in 2015 as a platform to inspire people to see plant-centered eating as accessible to help them overcome some of the same myths and stigmas I had when plant-based eating was brought to my attention. I was extremely resistant to the idea of “giving up” animal products” at first, but through trial and exploration, I found plant-centered eating to be amazing, abundant, and accessible.
Through the VegInspired platform, I shared vegan recipes, showcased vegan products, and started our VegInspired YouTube channel as a way to showcase restaurants that offered vegan food. Over the years, my wellness took a bit of a hit… I found that I was eating heavily processed ingredients and relying too much on takeout and vegan convenience foods.
About 2.5 years ago, I made a decision to ‘clean up my vegan way of eating to follow a cleaner, whole food approach. That decision has changed my life and the lives of countless others. Through my platform of VegInspired I tracked my journey to wellness, I journaled, I reflected, and I realized that the key to changing my lifestyle was a mindset shift. I set out to become the person who was eating whole-food, plant-based meals as my daily habits and not some short-term, short-lived diet.
By approaching the change as a lifestyle change, I’ve been able to successfully lose over 45 pounds and keep it off and achieve a level of wellness I haven’t had in over a decade! But weight loss isn’t the only achievement. That decision led to the growth of VegInspired, three plant-based cookbooks published, and the launch of the Eat MorePlants Academy, our international mentorship that helps people make plant-based eating their way of life so they can achieve their goals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been achieving my first client just three weeks after I opened my Academy. My clients are what motivates me each day. Helping them achieve their goals and celebrating their wins, and working through their challenges is what I jump out of bed for each day! This way of eating has changed my life, and I know that it can change theirs!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is learning to delegate the tasks that are not required to be done by me. I started as a solopreneur and was doing it all. As I’ve grown, the process of delegation and thinning out what is on my plate so I can focus on the essentials has been my biggest challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My top three tips are:
- Identify your purpose, that heartstring purpose that drives you every day.
- Take imperfect and inspired action, don’t put off something until it is perfect or perfectly planned. Just take action.
- Take time to fill your cup so you can show up to serve your community from your best self, eat the plants, hydrate, sleep, connect with nature, and practice quiet time.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Yes! I want to encourage others to take the leap of faith. A quick story… In October of 2018, my husband and I moved out of our 2400 sq ft townhome, traded in our leased vehicles, purchased a huge pickup truck, and moved into a 35-foot, 310 sq ft Fifth Wheel RV. We didn’t know what the outcome would be of this wild and crazy endeavor, and we knew most people thought we were nuts to “give up the American Dream” to live in a tiny home on wheels, but we did it anyway.
The outcome has been nothing short of incredible! We’ve traveled to more than half of the US states and explored dozens of amazing national and state parks, and seen some of the most beautiful sights in the United States. If your heart is pulling you to take a wild and crazy leap… go for it! I am grateful every day that we took a leap of faith and set out on an amazing adventure!
