Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenelle Vasic, founder of Vasic Media, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Jenelle Vasic, and I am the founder of Vasic Media, a digital marketing agency purposed to help small businesses grow online! Between social media management, content creation, product photography, branding, and web design, I serve my clients in a number of different ways.

Tell us about yourself

In March of 2020, I lost my job due to the pandemic. Little did I know, this loss ended up becoming an amazing life transition. I took a few months to think deeply about how I wanted to move forward. I didn't want a job that just made me money but one that I was passionate about and excited about. After working with a couple of small-business owners doing digital marketing freelance work, I took the plunge and launched my own business. With a background in journalism, I have always been passionate about storytelling. This position allows me to tell stories of small businesses to the public to enable them to be seen heard and bring them new sales and revenue! It's a win, win.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Next to launching my business, my biggest accomplishment was when my first client accepted my business proposal. Not only that, but after beginning work with them, they expressed how happy and appreciative they were for my work and the difference it was making in their organization. That made my heart so happy to think that the work I’ve begun in my business is having a practical impact on someone else and their business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The biggest challenge for me is creating boundaries with my clients. In this industry, I have had challenging (but good) conversations about what I can and cannot do because of limited time. I desire to have a really healthy work/home life, and I can’t do that if I’m not creating boundaries around my time with my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. It's easy to make excuses as to why you can't or shouldn't. You don't have it have everything figured out in order to begin.
  2. Become a great learner. I don't have all the answers, and I will never will. I look to other business owners' people and resources constantly because I deeply desire to learn and grow in my business.
  3. Be consistent. Create a schedule and stick to it. The beauty of my job is that I get to create my own schedule on my own terms, but as soon as I stray, I find myself losing control. Consistency in anything, including business, is key to growth.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I hope that in whatever you choose to pursue, you do it with a passionate heart.
