Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Landon Gartner, Founding Partner of Vanspec Marketing, located in Abbotsford, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a founding partner of Vanspec Marketing, a Canadian digital marketing agency at the forefront of modern online brand creation and digital strategy development.

Our core commitment to our clients is to be effective and bold strategic partners—sharing our creative vision and bringing in practical results. We bring hard data, creativity, and passion for helping our clients develop effective strategies and work towards achieving their goals.

We work with small and medium-sized businesses throughout North America and across a variety of industries—from transportation to food service and professional services.

Tell us about yourself

As a young man, I was always attracted to entrepreneurship and the fast-paced, ever-evolving lifestyle that comes with being a business owner. In 2017, I partnered with two others who share my passions, and we launched Vanspec Marketing.

Owning a digital marketing agency gives me the opportunity to not only own my own business and leverage my skills and abilities as a creative marketer, but it also provides me with an opportunity to connect with other entrepreneurs and learn the ins and outs of a vast array of different businesses—from single employee ventures to full-fledged North American corporations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I'm most proud of the fact that every day, I get to work alongside business owners and directly impact their business's success and revenue.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner is not for everyone and is often glamorized. In reality, the "always on" attitude that possesses me as an entrepreneur can become overpowering and make balancing work and my personal life a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. As a business owner and leader, your goal should be to empower those around you—not control everything.
  2. Start a business because of your passion, not to make money.
  3. Be prepared to commit all of your time to growing and building your business.
