Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anna Livermore, Founder and CEO of V.Mora, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

V.Mora is a Fashion Development and Consulting company that helps new designers launch their collections and existing designers scale and streamline their lines. Our goal at V.Mora is to make fashion design accessible. You don't even need to know how to sketch or draw; we will do that for you. We aim to bring your vision to life. A lot of our customers have always dreamed of starting a fashion line but just have not known where to start.

Tell us about yourself

I started as a pattern maker and learned production firsthand by doing it! I would create patterns for all different designers and really started understanding the logistics and mechanics behind the production. Designers would sit with me and ask for advice. I was already consulting for free, so by the time V.Mora was born, it was just a natural evolution. What continues to motivate me is the emotions our designers have when they launch or when they really feel like what we have advised clicks and works for them. Again, making fashion design accessible is our main goal here.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel like I get yearly wins with all the new designers that come to market with us. My biggest accomplishment has been being able to connect and work with amazing A-players both within the company but also within the business. V.Mora has evolved throughout the years, and so I would say the biggest accomplishment has been evolving through times like the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is that you are truly married to your business. This is good and bad. I truly think about it all the time. I try to think of ways to improve, or if there is a fire, I spend all my mental energy solving the problem. Being a business owner comes with a lot of responsibility as well. You are financially supporting a team, and one wrong move could mean payroll might be hard to pay or letting people go. This is ultimately what motivates me as well, taking care of my team.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand the vision or message that you want to achieve. From there, the HOW will naturally form.
  2. Be honest and humble and understand your skill set, understand where you may need to outsource or employ others where you might fall short in. It is also important to understand what each person brings to the table and to set clear responsibilities.
  3. Be financially responsible, especially if you are just starting out. Maybe you need to have a day job and learn in your free time or some sort of supplemental income.
