Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Vanetta Baker-Springer, Owner of V Class Makeup Artistry, located in Wilmington, DE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a self-taught makeup artist. I provide makeup for weddings, proms, birthdays, corporate events, and photo shoots. I have a range of customers from children in dance recitals to teenagers going to prom and graduation, brides wanting to look their best on their special day, and expecting mothers for baby showers. I have also done makeup for Delaware’s own Congresswoman, Lisa Blunt-Rochester.

Tell us about yourself

I never really wanted to do makeup. I would do my own makeup really well, and people would stop me and ask who did my makeup, lol. Most people would ask, "can you do mine?" and I would always decline because being a makeup artist wasn’t my thing then! It was my little sister who really pushed me to be an artist. She would say, 'you better start a business, that’s your calling.' So here I am now, a full-time makeup artist, and loving it! What motivates me is knowing I can enhance people’s natural beauty and make them feel extra beautiful.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to stay consistent, not wavering because someone isn’t too fond of my practices. I run a very strict professional business. I never wanted to exhibit any of the negativity that comes with black business owners.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is not taking enough time for yourself. I would say that’s my biggest issue.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pace yourself; everything will not happen overnight.
  2. Do your research.
  3. Marketing is key. Be consistent, post daily, and engage with people daily to get your business name out there.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always smile. It’s your best accessory.
