Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jason Lachance, owner of Urban Crush, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is Urban Crush hair salon! We’re a queer-owned and operated salon in the heart of Saint Boniface in the historic Provencher district. Our goal is to create a safe space for everybody from all walks of life! Our passion and creativity for the love of people and hair keep us motivated and growing as artists!

Tell us about yourself

As the owner of Urban Crush, I always wanted to create a boutique salon that represents myself and my staff and grow together as a team. Creating a safe space for staff and guests to allow their creative freedom to grow and be expressed. From creative shoots to the daily expression of our love for hair keeps us excited and passionate about what we do!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has definitely been the last couple of years. Running a business through the pandemic has been a true test for our whole team. If we can make it in this, we can make it through anything together.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I feel the hardest thing about being a business owner is definitely separating my work life from my home life. There’s not a moment when I’m not thinking about my business and my work family. It’s something I continuously work on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to your gut.
  2. There will be great times and tough times.
  3. Continue to educate yourself in whatever field you're in.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
